Invisalign is an investment, you will get the smile of your dreams after wearing discreet, clear aligners rather than wearing traditional metal braces. However you must ensure that you are looking after your aligners. This is vital to ensure that the treatment you have invested in gives you the best results.
Here are some top tips on how to ensure that your invisalign journey is smooth and you get the perfect results for your smile.
- Take your clear aligners out when you eat
Firstly, wearing your aligners and trying to eat would be a massive challenge. Don’t do it! You risk damaging your aligners whilst you are trying to chew. If you break or damage your aligners this will potentially slow your treatment time down
- Ensure that you wear your aligners as much as possible, only taking them out when you eat or drink (other than water).
Our Invisalign dentist Antonio, recommends that you wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day. This should allow sufficient time for you to remove the aligners to clean them and also brush your teeth and eat. If this is not possible and you know you cannot wear them consistently for this time then we would recommend that you opt for fixed braces, as you do not want to increase the duration of your treatment if you are not wearing them the majority of the day. During treatment your aligners are changed every 2 weeks, but this will only be effective if you are wearing them for at least 22 hours a day.
- Clean your aligners every day
Just as you would clean your teeth every day, it is very important to ensure that these clear aligners are washed with soapy water each day. As they are clear they easily stain. A member of our team will ensure you know how to look after your aligners.
- Ensure your teeth are clean and well looked after
When you remove your Invisalign aligners, we recommend you clean and brush your teeth before placing them back into the mouth. This will ensure that you reduce the risk of bacteria remaining on your teeth when you put the aligners back in after eating and drinking and also reduce the chances of getting cavities. We would also recommend you visit one of our dental hygienists for a 6 monthly clean.
- It’s important to wear your retainer after treatment as directed by your dentist
At the end of Invisalign treatment we will give you a retainer to wear to ensure that your teeth do not move back to their original position. It is extremely important that you wear this regularly. We will discuss this with you once you have attended your consultation.
