Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which Is Right for You?

Replacing missing teeth can truly transform your life. In 2025, advancements in modern dentistry mean you have more options than ever, with dental implants and dentures among the most reliable solutions.

For more than 3 decades, Stourbridge Dental and Implant Clinic has been a trusted name in the West Midlands, offering everything from everyday check-ups to life-changing restorative treatments to suit your individual needs. Our commitment to personalised care means we’ve helped countless patients achieve healthier, more confident smiles through our range of implant and denture solutions.

In this article, we’ll not only explore the key differences between the two, but also share what some of our patients think about their own treatment journeys, giving you a first-hand look at the impact these solutions can have.

So, which option is right for you? Let’s explore the key differences.

Dental Implants in the West Midlands

Did you know that over 3 million people in the UK have chosen dental implants, with that number increasing by around 500,000 annually? Dental implants are a fixed, long-term solution that closely mimic natural teeth. They are titanium posts placed into the jawbone, which then support replacement teeth such as crowns or dentures.

Types of Dental Implants We Offer:

  • Single Tooth Implants
Ideal if you are missing just one tooth due to trauma, accident or extraction. A crown is fixed to the implant, blending seamlessly with your smile and offering a durable, natural look. While the healing process takes around 3-6 months, you’ll be provided with a temporary prosthesis during this time.
  • Overdentures
Unlike traditional dentures, overdentures are anchored by implants, meaning they won’t slip or move when you eat or speak. They can replace a full arch of teeth, providing stability and confidence. Treatment can often be completed in as little as 3-4 months, depending on the patient.

Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Permanent and durable solution
  • Help maintain the structure of the jawbone
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • No slipping or movement when eating or talking

Patient Boo came to us following a difficult extraction at another practice. Despite only being in her mid-40s, she thought dentures were her only option – until she discovered dental implants.

“The implant I had is amazing- you would never know that it is an implant …it looks like my normal tooth. Thank you to all the team – I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of having an implant.”

Dentures in the West Midlands

Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that rest on the gums. They are a cost-effective way to restore your smile and can be custom-made for comfort and fit.

Types of Dentures We Offer:

  • Cobalt Chromium (Metal Dentures)
    • Standard: Made from a non-allergenic alloy designed to sit directly on the gums.
    • Modified: A thin layer of plastic is added to prevent metal contact with the gums.

These dentures are strong, durable, hygienic, and can be fitted with clasps for extra grip. They are often used when a narrow but strong denture is needed.

  • Immediate Dentures
Placed straight after tooth extraction, these act as both a cosmetic solution and a bandage for healing gums, helping prevent facial distortion and aiding speech adjustment.
  • Complete Dentures
Designed to replace a full arch of teeth. They rely on the gum ridges for stability, but over time, natural bone resorption can cause them to become loose.

Benefits of Dentures:

  • Non-invasive and affordable
  • Quick solution for missing teeth
  • Can restore appearance and function
  • Immediate dentures offer same-day results after extractions

Kevin the denture technician fitted my immediate denture… After having the front tooth out I felt quite upset but Kevin put in the denture and my smile was back. The nurses – Hannah and Georgia that assisted treated me so well… What more can I say – an amazing team.” – Karen Hanson

Implants vs. Dentures – Which Should You Choose?

  • If you’re looking for a long-term, stable solution that prevents jawbone shrinkage and feels like natural teeth, dental implants (including overdentures) are often the best choice.
  • If you prefer a more affordable or temporary solution, or are not suitable for implant treatment, dentures may be the right fit.

At Stourbridge Dental and Implant Clinic, we’ll carefully assess your needs, lifestyle, and oral health to recommend the treatment that’s best for you.

Preparing the Jaw For Implants

Sometimes, before placing dental implants, extra steps are needed to ensure there’s enough strong, healthy bone to support them. For patients who don’t have sufficient bone height in the upper jaw, especially near the molars or premolars, we may recommend a sinus lift. This gentle procedure creates the extra space needed for implants by adjusting the sinus area.

In other cases, if the jawbone has weakened or thinned over time, a bone graft can be performed to rebuild strength and stability. These treatments help create the ideal foundation for long-lasting dental implants.
