Durable and effective restorative solutions

For tooth decay that is beyond needing a filling but not quite in need of a crown, inlays and onlays are the perfect solution. They are custom made, durable and stable.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays work in a similar way to a filling, used within the tooth to repair damage. Onlays are used to restore larger areas of decay, covering the outside cusp or tip of the tooth. They can be used to treat more extensive areas of decay and damage and slight fractures in the tooth, providing a less invasive and more affordable alternative to other restorative solutions.

We use porcelain inlays and onlays at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic, and take care to colour match them to your natural teeth. Once treatment is complete, the inlay or onlay perfectly blends in and can’t be seen when you talk or smile.

What does the treatment involve?

At your initial consultation appointment, we assess your dental health, checking there is no other decay present. We explain the treatment options available and discuss which would be the most suitable for you.

We begin by removing decay from the tooth and giving it a thorough clean. We perform an intra-oral scan of the area, which is used to create your bespoke inlay or onlay at a specialised dental laboratory. The scanner offers both accuracy and greater comfort than traditional impressions. A temporary filling can be fitted to protect your tooth between appointments.

When it is ready, we simply fit your inlay or onlay to your tooth, leaving it strong, secure and providing complete protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I look after my inlay or onlay?

The best way is to treat your inlay or onlay just as you would your natural teeth. An excellent hygiene routine at home, including brushing and flossing twice a day, combined with regular check ups with your dentist should help your restoration last a long time.

  • How long will my inlay or onlay last?

Inlays and onlays are designed to be long lasting, and should remain trouble-free for many years. Some factors can affect their lifespan, including the quality of your oral hygiene at home and forceful chewing.

  • Why should I choose an inlay or onlay?

Inlays and onlays are bespoke, tailored to fit you precisely. They are minimally invasive, preserving more of the healthy tooth than with a crown. They are also more durable and stable than a standard filling, highly aesthetic and function just like your other teeth.
