Choosing between Dentures and Dental Implants is a difficult decision. There are multiple factors you may need to consider, for example:

  • The condition of your oral health
  • Affordability
  • Personal choice

What is a denture?

A denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth. You will have to clean them daily and take good care of them. If affordability is an issue, then dentures are a more cost-effective solution than a dental implant. However, you may require more appointments at the dentist if your denture needs adjusting, which can occasionally increase their cost over time. Dentures can take a little getting used to, for example, when eating or talking, but any discomfort soon settles down. In the end, most patients find them comfortable and easy to wear.

Furthermore, dentures can cause bone loss, as they are unable to stimulate the jawbone. This can affect your facial structure, and in some cases, your denture will fit less securely over time. However, this can take several years if it does happen.

Dentures are a classic, and technological advances have ensured that patients are pleased with the results. Here at Stourbridge Dental and Implant Clinic, we have a Clinical Dental Technician, Kevin, who has numerous years of experience and is highly recommended by his current patients.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a permanent option for those looking to replace their missing teeth. The clinician will place a titanium post into the patient’s jawbone, replicating the tooth root that initially existed. This will then allow the clinician to attach an artificial tooth on top of this, known as a crown, which replicates your existing tooth structure.

Dental implants are considered the ‘gold standard’ when replacing missing teeth. They provide the most natural, aesthetically-pleasing smile and deliver the closest functionality to our existing teeth. They require a lot of attention and care. For example, your oral hygiene has to be at an optimum, or else the implant can fail. However, they do allow for normal speech, which sometimes can be a limiting factor with dentures.

Dental implants are exceptional and can last for many years – sometimes even a lifetime – for some patients. Unlike dentures, implants provide jawbone stimulation and prevent bone loss, ensuring that your facial structure remains intact. That said, dental implants are more expensive than dentures but often require fewer visits to the dentist as they tend to last longer.
