The thought of having a tooth removed can understandably cause anxiety. Many patients worry about pain, discomfort, or complications, especially if they have not visited a dentist in some time. At Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic, we understand these concerns and work hard to make tooth extraction as calm, gentle, and stress-free as possible.
Our philosophy is always to preserve your natural teeth wherever we can. However, there are situations where removing a tooth is the best option to protect your overall oral health, relieve pain, or prepare for further treatment. When extraction is necessary, you can be confident that you are in experienced and caring hands.
There are several reasons why a tooth extraction may be recommended. Common causes include:
Every case is carefully assessed, and we will always discuss your options in detail before recommending extraction.
One of the most common questions we are asked is whether tooth extraction hurts. The simple answer is no.
All extractions at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic are carried out using local anaesthetic, ensuring the area is completely numb before treatment begins. You may feel some pressure or gentle movement as the tooth is loosened, but this should not be painful. Our clinicians take great care to work slowly and precisely, minimising disruption to the surrounding teeth and gums.
For patients who feel particularly nervous or anxious, we also offer IV sedation. This allows you to remain in a deeply relaxed, calm state throughout the procedure, with little to no memory of the treatment afterwards. Sedation is an excellent option for those with dental phobia or those undergoing more complex extractions.
Not all tooth extractions are the same. The type of procedure depends on the position of the tooth and its condition.
A simple extraction is performed when the tooth is visible above the gum line and can be removed easily. This may apply to teeth damaged by decay, fractures, or gum disease. The tooth is gently loosened and removed with specialised instruments.
Surgical extractions are required when a tooth is broken below the gum, difficult to access, or has not fully erupted. This is commonly the case with impacted teeth or teeth being removed in preparation for dental implants. Surgical extractions are carried out with the same focus on comfort and precision.
Wisdom teeth often cause problems due to lack of space, incorrect positioning, or partial eruption. This can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and damage to neighbouring teeth. Removing wisdom teeth can prevent these issues and protect your long-term oral health. Our team has extensive experience in wisdom tooth extraction, including complex and impacted cases.
At Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic, oral surgery is led by Consultant Oral Surgeon Mr Luis Bruzual. With extensive training and experience, Luis is recognised by the General Dental Council and listed on the GDC’s specialist register. His calm, compassionate approach and technical expertise ensure the highest standards of care, even for complex procedures.
Other oral surgery services we offer include:
Following an extraction, it is normal to experience some tenderness for a few days. In most cases, simple over-the-counter pain relief is sufficient – the same medication you might take for a headache. We will provide clear aftercare instructions to help promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Aspirin should be avoided, as it can increase bleeding.
Before you leave the surgery, we ensure the socket is clean, stable, and that you feel comfortable and confident about your aftercare.
Natalie, a nervous patient who avoided the dentist for over 10 years, underwent multiple extractions with us. She described sitting in her car for 30 minutes before her appointment, shaking with fear. However, her experience quickly changed.
“It doesn’t feel like a visit to the dentist. Every step is done at my pace. For me it’s about the experience and the trust.”
Natalie is now confidently enjoying her implant treatment and attending future visits without anxiety.
“The service provided is exceptional. I can’t recommend them highly enough.”
