If you love good food, living in the West Midlands certainly gives you plenty of reasons to eat out. From brunch in Brierley Hill and independent cafés in Stourbridge to curry nights, Sunday roasts, pub lunches and food festivals, there is always something tempting on the menu.
So, if you are considering Invisalign, one of the questions you may be asking is: can I still enjoy all my favourite foods?
The short answer is yes.
Invisalign clear aligners are designed to fit around your everyday lifestyle. Unlike traditional fixed braces, there are no brackets or wires to work around when you are eating. You simply remove your aligners before meals and drinks, enjoy your food, clean your teeth and put your aligners back in.
Here at Stourbridge Dental & Implant Clinic, we regularly speak to patients who are surprised by just how straightforward Invisalign treatment can be. Here is my guide to enjoying life as a West Midlands foodie while keeping your clear aligner treatment on track.
The most important rule is simple: never eat while wearing your Invisalign aligners.
Before a meal or snack, remove your aligners and place them safely in their case. Once you have finished eating, ideally brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.
You should always remove your Invisalign aligners before drinking hot tea or coffee. Hot liquids can warp the plastic trays, and the dark pigments and tannins in tea and coffee will quickly stain your aligners and teeth. Water is always the preferred choice while wearing Invisalign, as it keeps your aligners clear and avoids any risk of warping or discolouration.
Your dentist will advise you on the appropriate wear time for your particular treatment, but Invisalign aligners are generally intended to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours each day. Planning your meals can therefore make it much easier to stay on schedule.
Avocado toast, pancakes, eggs, pastries and coffee are hardly foods you want to give up just because you are having Invisalign treatment.
The good news is that you do not have to.
Simply take your aligners out before your brunch and enjoy your meal normally. When you are finished, clean your teeth if possible and put your aligners back in.
The same principle applies whether you are enjoying brunch in Brierley Hill, meeting friends for coffee in Stourbridge or grabbing lunch somewhere around Dudley or Halesowen.
A traditional Sunday roast is one of life’s pleasures, and Invisalign does not mean missing out.
Roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, vegetables, meat and gravy can all remain firmly on the menu. Your Invisalign aligners simply need to come out before you start eating.
Afterwards, give your teeth a thorough clean and return your aligners to your mouth. It is really the routine around eating, rather than the roast itself, that matters.
Whether a Balti or a biryani with friends, the West Midlands has an excellent reputation for food with plenty of flavour.
Spicy dishes, rice, naan, sauces and other favourite curry-house foods are not automatically off limits during Invisalign treatment. Because the aligners are removable, you can enjoy your meal without worrying about food getting caught around brackets and wires.
However, strongly coloured foods and drinks can contribute to staining, which is another reason to keep your aligners out while eating and drinking.
Frequent snacking can make Invisalign treatment feel more complicated.
If you have a biscuit, put your aligners back in, then fancy another snack half an hour later, you are repeatedly going through the same process of removing the aligners, eating, cleaning your teeth and replacing them.
Where possible, grouping meals and snacks together can make your routine much easier and help you achieve the recommended daily wear time.
